Knightbridge:

Knightsbridge is undoubtedly best known for its exclusive shopping, which includes the world famous Harrod’s store – the most expensive in London for many things but also a haven for things you simply cannot get elsewhere – including the store’s unique atmosphere.  Harrod’s is actually on Brompton Road – Knightsbridge runs from Hyde Park Corner, in parallel with the edge of Hyde Park and parts way with Brompton Road at the junction where the underground station and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel are.  The area has many other exclusive shops, including Harvey Nichols, and do not be surprised to bump into a celebrity or two shopping here.  Knightsbridge is also a very expensive residential area which attracts those of the rich and famous who like to have a flat or house in the heart of London.

Mayfair:

Mayfair is a broader area than Knightsbridge which is defined by Piccadilly, to the south, Park Lane, to the west, Oxford Street, to the north and Regent Street, to the east.  It is an area of some of central London’s best known hotels – such as The Dorchester, London Hilton on Park Lane and Claridges – and most famous gambling clubs.  It is also home to many of London’s embassies, including the U.S. Embassy is in Grosvenor Square, and is – as defined by the shopping streets which surround it – one of the best places for shopping in London.  More exclusive shops are in Bond Street and New Bond Street, as well as in several other small streets, such as Duke Street.  Mayfair retains an almost magical village atmosphere in places – from the big garden squares of Grosvenor Square and Berkeley Square to old, narrow streets such as Avery Row, with side street restaurants and shops you can only discover by walking around.

South Kensington:

South Kensington is just to the west of Knightsbridge and is the area around Cromwell Road between Exhibition Road and Gloucester Road.  It is another area which still has a village feel to it and it characterised by small shops and restaurants which you will not find anywhere else, often offering products or cuisine that are hard to find elsewhere too.  South Kensington is home to many of London’s main museums – the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum  – as well as the Royal Albert Hall.  Most of these buildings were built at the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851, organised by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband and consort.  Kensington Gardens and Palace – the latter now London home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their family – are at the top of Exhibition Road.  The area remains a fashionable place to live for those that can afford it.

Chelsea:

Chelsea is defined by Fulham Road to the north and by the River Thames to the south.  A long part of the road running alongside the river is called Chelsea Embankment and then becomes Cheyne Walk to the west.  Chelsea may be best known internationally these days for the Royal Hospital Chelsea and for Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place there for a week in May each year.  However, King’s Road, which runs west from Sloane Square gained fame in the 1960’s and 1970’s as the centre of fashion at that time and remains a lovely shopping street with some quite unique boutiques and small shops, including antique shops.  The Saatchi Gallery is here and is home to some of the best contemporary art to be found in London today.  Chelsea remains strongly residential in the side streets and gardens square which surround King’s Road and its ease of access to transport around central London from Sloane Square as well as its proximity to Victoria Station will undoubtedly long ensure it remains so.

Each of these very special areas has something unique about it but one thing is common to all:  they all remain exclusive areas where people with money like to live, thanks, for the most part, to a village feel which is special to each area.  Historically, of course, each of these areas was a village – comfortably outside of the capital’s walls, well to the West.  In Kensington Gore, South Kensington, you can still find a milestone showing the distance to London and it is not hard to picture carriages passing through here, still with some way to go.  In the 21st century, these are very special, exclusive areas to live and each of them is a great base for your London stay, both to enjoy their own special atmosphere and to enjoy everything else that central London has to offer.
